What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen, and to repair the abdominal muscles where they have separated. This separation — known as diastasis recti — is common following pregnancy or significant weight change and cannot be corrected through exercise alone.

The procedure results in a flatter, firmer abdomen and a more defined waistline. It is frequently combined with liposuction to further refine the flanks and contours of the torso. The main scar is placed low across the abdomen — beneath the bikini line — and a small scar is created around the navel.

Abdominoplasty is different from liposuction: it addresses skin laxity and muscle separation, which liposuction alone cannot treat. For patients with both concerns, the two procedures are often combined.

Is this right for you?

  • You have loose, excess abdominal skin — particularly after pregnancy or significant weight loss
  • You have a visible abdominal bulge that does not improve with exercise
  • You have been diagnosed with diastasis recti (muscle separation)
  • Your weight is stable and you are not planning further pregnancies

What to Expect

First Week

Rest is prioritised. Mild to moderate discomfort is managed with medication. Light walking is encouraged from day 1–2 to support circulation and reduce the risk of clots.

Weeks 2–4

Discomfort reduces significantly by week 3. A compression garment is worn continuously. Return to desk work is typically possible by week 2–3.

Long-Term

The scar matures over 12–18 months, fading considerably. Physical exercise and sport can be resumed at 8 weeks. Results are permanent provided weight remains stable.

Are You a Suitable Candidate?

You have excess abdominal skin following significant weight loss or pregnancy that does not respond to diet or exercise

You have muscle separation (diastasis recti) causing abdominal protrusion

You have maintained a stable weight for at least 6 months

You have completed your family, or have discussed future pregnancy plans with your surgeon

You are in good general health and a non-smoker, or able to stop smoking for the required period

Abdominoplasty is not a weight loss procedure. It is most appropriate for patients who are close to their target weight and have localised skin laxity or muscle separation that cannot be resolved through diet and exercise alone. Future pregnancies may affect results and are an important consideration to discuss at consultation.

Post-operative follow-up is provided by our NMC-registered Advanced Nurse Practitioners in Oxford, ensuring your recovery is monitored by qualified professionals without repeated travel to Portugal.

Risks and Considerations

Abdominoplasty is a well-established procedure, but involves a longer recovery than many other cosmetic surgeries. Risks include:

  • Seroma (fluid accumulation) — the most common complication, usually managed with drainage
  • Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism — a significant risk with abdominal surgery; prevented by anticoagulant therapy, compression, and early mobilisation
  • Infection — managed with antibiotics
  • Delayed wound healing, particularly at the horizontal scar
  • Numbness or altered sensation in the abdominal skin
  • Scarring — a horizontal scar is placed low, designed to be hidden by underwear or swimwear; a small scar around the navel is also expected
  • Asymmetry or contour irregularity

Frequently Asked Questions

Is abdominoplasty a weight loss treatment?

No. Abdominoplasty removes excess skin and repairs the abdominal muscles, but it is not designed for weight loss. It is most effective for patients who are close to their target weight and have skin laxity or muscle separation that cannot be resolved through other means.

Can liposuction be combined with abdominoplasty?

Yes. Lipoabdominoplasty combines abdominoplasty with liposuction of the flanks and trunk to improve overall body contour. Your surgeon will advise on whether this is appropriate for your anatomy and goals.

Where is the scar?

The main scar is placed horizontally in the suprapubic region — designed to sit below the waistband of underwear or swimwear. A small scar is also placed around the navel. Scar maturation takes up to 18 months.

When can I fly home after surgery?

Flying is not recommended for at least 1 month following abdominoplasty due to the increased risk of deep vein thrombosis. Most patients stay in Lisbon for 7–10 days before returning to the UK by other means, with follow-up care provided in Oxford.
