What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures worldwide. It is designed to increase breast volume, restore fullness following pregnancy or weight loss, improve breast symmetry, or enhance overall body proportion.

There are three main approaches: implant-based augmentation (using cohesive silicone gel implants), fat transfer augmentation (using the patient's own fat, harvested via liposuction), and a hybrid approach that combines both. The choice of technique depends on your anatomy, goals, and available fat reserves.

Implants are placed through a small incision beneath the breast fold (inframammary), which heals to a discreet scar of approximately 4–5 cm hidden in the natural crease.

Is this right for you?

  • You feel your breast size is smaller than you would like
  • You have experienced volume loss following pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight changes
  • You have a natural asymmetry you would like to correct
  • You are looking for a proportionate, natural-looking improvement in breast shape and size

What to Expect

First Week

Some tightness and discomfort as the implants settle. A supportive bra is worn from day one. Most patients return to light daily activities within 3–5 days.

Weeks 2–4

Swelling subsides progressively. Return to desk-based work is typically possible from week 2. Avoid lifting or strenuous activity throughout this period.

Long-Term

Final results are visible at 3 months, once implants have fully settled into position. High-impact sport and gym work can typically be resumed at 6–8 weeks.

Are You a Suitable Candidate?

You are dissatisfied with the size or shape of your breasts and have maintained a stable weight for at least 6 months

You have experienced volume loss following pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight changes

You have a natural asymmetry you would like to correct

You are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding

You are in good general health, a non-smoker, or able to stop smoking for the required period

You have realistic expectations about the results and the limitations of implant-based surgery

Breast augmentation is generally performed once breast development is complete, typically from age 18. Patients should be at a stable weight before proceeding, as significant weight changes after surgery can alter results. All aspects of suitability are assessed at consultation.

Risks and Considerations

Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures worldwide. As with any surgery, it carries risks that your surgeon will discuss in full at consultation.

  • Capsular contracture — the most common long-term complication, involving hardening of the tissue around the implant; managed with medication or, in some cases, further surgery
  • Implant rupture or leakage — modern cohesive silicone gel implants are designed to retain their shape; routine imaging is recommended every few years
  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation — usually temporary
  • Scarring — the inframammary incision is small (approximately 4.5 cm) and placed in the natural breast fold
  • Asymmetry of results
  • Infection — uncommon, managed with antibiotics; rarely requires implant removal
  • BIA-ALCL — a very rare type of lymphoma associated predominantly with textured implants; discussed at consultation

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do breast implants last?

Modern cohesive silicone gel implants do not have a fixed expiry date. They are not routinely replaced unless a complication arises. Periodic imaging (ultrasound or MRI) is recommended every few years to check implant integrity.

Will I be able to breastfeed after breast augmentation?

The inframammary incision used at this clinic avoids the areola and breast tissue, which helps to preserve breastfeeding ability in most patients. Your surgeon will discuss this in detail at consultation.

What is the difference between implants and fat transfer?

Implant-based augmentation uses cohesive silicone gel implants to add volume and improve shape. Fat transfer uses your own fat, harvested via liposuction and reinjected into the breast — suitable for modest volume increases and patients with sufficient fat reserves. A hybrid approach combining both is also possible. The right choice depends on your anatomy, goals, and available fat.

When can I fly home after surgery?

Flying is not recommended for 3 weeks following breast augmentation. Most patients remain in Lisbon for 5–7 days before returning to the UK, with follow-up care provided by our Oxford nursing team.
