What is Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty) is a procedure to reduce the size and weight of overly large breasts. Beyond the aesthetic dimension, large breasts often cause significant physical discomfort — including chronic back and neck pain, deep bra strap grooves, skin irritation beneath the breasts, and difficulty with physical exercise.
During the procedure, excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are surgically removed, and the breast is reshaped to a more proportionate size and contour. The nipple and areola are also repositioned to a more natural height. In cases where a size reduction alone is insufficient, a breast lift (mastopexy) may be combined with the reduction.
The result is a lighter, more proportionate breast that alleviates physical symptoms and improves overall quality of life and confidence.
Is this right for you?
- Chronic neck, shoulder, or back pain caused by breast size and weight
- Deep grooves from bra straps
- Skin irritation or rashes beneath the breasts
- Difficulty with physical exercise or day-to-day activities
- You feel your breast size is disproportionate to your body frame
Before & After Expectations
Understanding Breast Reduction Results Before Surgery
Before and after photographs can be useful in consultation, but they should never be read as a guarantee of your own result. Breast reduction outcomes depend on your starting anatomy, breast volume, skin quality, nipple position, asymmetry, scar pattern, healing and future weight or hormonal changes.
During consultation, your surgeon can explain what is realistic for your frame, how much reduction may be appropriate, where scars are likely to sit and how the breast shape is expected to settle over time. The aim is not only a smaller breast, but a safer, proportionate result that relieves symptoms where possible and still fits your body.
Recovery & Aftercare
What to Expect
First Week
Post-surgical dressings are in place. Mild to moderate discomfort is managed with medication. Rest is important, with light activity encouraged from day 2–3.
Weeks 2–4
Return to desk work is typically possible around week 2. Swelling gradually reduces. A supportive bra is worn throughout recovery to support healing.
Long-Term
Scars mature and fade significantly over 12–18 months. Physical exercise can be resumed at 6–8 weeks. Results are permanent, though affected by future weight changes and ageing.

Important Information
Risks and Considerations
Breast reduction is a well-established procedure with consistently high patient satisfaction. As with all surgery, risks include:
- Changes in nipple or breast sensation — temporary or permanent, in a small proportion of patients
- Scarring — scars are placed at the areola border and below the breast; they fade significantly over 12–18 months
- Delayed wound healing, particularly at the T-junction of the scar in some techniques
- Asymmetry — minor differences in shape or volume between sides
- Impact on breastfeeding — ability to breastfeed may be affected; discuss with your surgeon before proceeding
- Infection — uncommon, managed with antibiotics
- Fat necrosis (hardening of fatty tissue) — rare
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I still be able to breastfeed after surgery?
Breast reduction surgery may affect the ability to breastfeed, as it involves repositioning the nipple-areola complex and, in some cases, working close to the breast ducts. This should be discussed in detail at consultation, particularly if future breastfeeding is important to you.
How much will be removed, and what size will I be after?
The amount of tissue removed and your final size are planned collaboratively at consultation, based on your anatomy, your symptoms, and your aesthetic goals. The aim is a proportionate result that relieves your symptoms — not a specific bra size.
Are the results permanent?
The results of breast reduction are long-lasting. However, future significant weight changes, pregnancy, or hormonal changes may alter the size and shape of your breasts over time.
How long is the recovery?
Most patients return to light daily activities within 2 weeks. Exercise and physically demanding activities should be avoided for 2 months. Scars continue to mature and fade for up to 18 months.
