What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a medical device fitted with fine needles to create thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin. These microscopic perforations trigger the skin's natural wound-healing response, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin without causing visible damage to the skin surface.
The treatment also significantly increases skin permeability immediately after the session, allowing topically applied active ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, vitamins and growth factors, to penetrate deeply and work more effectively than they would through intact skin.
The result is a progressive improvement in skin quality that develops over several months as the collagen remodelling process continues. Microneedling is one of the most versatile skin treatments available, addressing a broad range of concerns, from fine lines and acne scars to stretch marks, enlarged pores and scalp conditions, with a strong clinical evidence base and a well-established safety profile.
Conditions treated
- Acne scars: atrophic and rolling scars
- Fine lines and early wrinkles
- Enlarged pores
- Uneven skin texture and tone
- Age spots and pigmentation
- Perioral lines ("barcode" lines)
- Stretch marks: especially early, red striae
- Hair loss (scalp stimulation for alopecia)
The Treatment
What to Expect
Before the Session
A topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the treatment area 20–30 minutes before the procedure begins. This makes the session comfortable for most patients. Your skin is cleansed and any active ingredients to be used alongside the needling are prepared.
During the Session
The microneedling device is passed systematically over the treatment area, creating controlled micro-channels in the dermis. The depth is adjusted depending on the area and the concern being treated, deeper penetration for scars and stretch marks, finer settings for general skin quality. Sessions take approximately 15–30 minutes.
After the Session
Redness similar to mild sunburn is expected for 24–72 hours. Minor pinpoint bleeding during the procedure is normal and resolves immediately. Makeup should be avoided for 48 hours, and sun exposure minimised for 72 hours with daily SPF. Gym, pools and saunas are avoided for 48 hours. Most patients return to normal activities within two to three days.
For UK Patients
Planning a Microneedling Course from the UK
Because the recommended protocol is four to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, UK patients typically plan their treatment course across multiple visits to Lisbon, or combine microneedling sessions with other appointments at the clinic. Sessions can also be timed to fit a broader treatment plan that includes surgical consultations or procedures.
There is no restriction on flying after microneedling. You can travel home the same day or the following day. The 2–3 days of redness are manageable with standard skincare and do not require clinical monitoring, there is no need to remain in Lisbon beyond the day of treatment.
Interim sessions and ongoing skin reviews can be supported through our Oxford offices, reducing the number of trips to Lisbon required throughout the course. Your clinician will advise on the optimal session schedule based on your treatment goals and travel availability.
Microneedling
Are You a Suitable Candidate?
You have acne scars, enlarged pores, fine lines or uneven skin texture and are looking for a clinically proven, non-surgical solution
You have early or red stretch marks that have not yet fully matured, microneedling is most effective on striae that are still in the inflammatory phase
You want a treatment that uses your own biology to improve skin quality, with no injected substances required
You are able to commit to a course of sessions and are comfortable with 2–3 days of redness after each treatment
You are in good general health with no active skin infections, inflammatory acne or open wounds in the treatment area
Microneedling is not recommended in the presence of active skin infections, active inflammatory acne, rosacea flares, or for patients on certain medications including isotretinoin. Your clinician will review your full medical history and skin condition before recommending treatment.
Your Journey
From First Enquiry to Treatment
Initial Consultation
Your consultation, in person in Lisbon or Oxford, or via video call, covers your skin concerns, medical history, skincare routine and any previous treatments. Your clinician will assess your skin type and condition, confirm suitability, and recommend the appropriate protocol and needle depth settings for your goals.
Treatment Planning
A personalised treatment plan is agreed, covering the number of sessions, the interval between them, the areas to be treated, and any active ingredients to be used alongside the needling. For UK patients, sessions are scheduled around your visits to Lisbon.
First Session
Anaesthetic cream is applied, your skin is prepared, and the microneedling procedure is performed. You will leave the clinic with redness that typically resolves within 48–72 hours. A first improvement in skin luminosity and texture is often noticed after this initial session.
Subsequent Sessions
Each session builds progressively on the last, deepening the collagen remodelling response. Visible improvements in scar depth, pore size and skin texture typically become apparent from the third session onwards, with the full benefit of the course continuing to develop for up to six months after the final session.
Maintenance
After completing the initial course, periodic maintenance sessions, typically one to two per year, help preserve and consolidate the results. Your clinician will advise on a maintenance schedule based on your skin's response and your ongoing goals.
Important Information
Risks and Considerations
Microneedling has an excellent safety profile when performed with properly sterilised, medical-grade equipment by a qualified practitioner. Serious complications are rare.
- Redness and mild swelling: expected for 24–72 hours after each session
- Mild peeling or flaking: occasionally present in the days following treatment as skin renews
- Temporary skin sensitivity and warmth: normal in the 24–48 hours after the procedure
- Bruising: occasional, particularly in thinner-skinned areas
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: rare but possible, more common in darker skin tones; managed with appropriate pre- and post-treatment care
- Infection: very uncommon with sterile technique; managed with antibiotics if it occurs
- Sun sensitivity is heightened after treatment: strict SPF use is essential for 72 hours
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
How many sessions are needed?
A minimum of four to six sessions is recommended, spaced four to six weeks apart. The exact number depends on the concern being treated, acne scars and stretch marks typically require more sessions than general skin quality improvement. Your clinician will advise on the most appropriate protocol at consultation.
Is microneedling painful?
The procedure is generally well tolerated. A topical anaesthetic cream is applied for 20–30 minutes before the session, making it comfortable for most patients. Some sensitivity is normal over bonier areas, but significant pain is uncommon. Most patients describe a mild scratching or vibrating sensation.
How long is the recovery?
Most patients experience redness similar to mild sunburn for 24–72 hours. Makeup should be avoided for 48 hours and sun exposure minimised for 72 hours. Most people return to normal social activities within two to three days. There is no restriction on flying after treatment.
When will I see results?
An improvement in skin luminosity and brightness is often noticeable after the first session. More significant results, particularly for scars, texture and pore size, typically become apparent from the third session onwards. The full benefit of the course continues to develop for up to six months after the final session, as the collagen remodelling process completes.
Can microneedling be done in summer?
Yes, with appropriate precautions. Strict daily SPF use and avoidance of direct sun exposure in the 72 hours around each session are essential. Your clinician will provide specific guidance based on the time of year and your skin type. Some patients prefer to schedule their course in autumn or winter to minimise sun exposure risk.
